How to Create an 80's Style Text Effect in Photoshop

The 1980s was a decade of great fascination with technology and its potential for the future. Sci-fi movies such as Tron and Back to the Future captivated audiences with their depiction of futuristic worlds, where computer technology played a central role. One design element that stood out during this era was chrome styling, which added a touch of mystique and otherworldliness to any visual composition. In this tutorial, we will explore how to create an 80's style text effect in Photoshop.

Step 1: Preparation

To begin, fire up your Photoshop and create a new document. For our example, we'll use a canvas size of 1000 px × 350 px. This will give us enough space to work with larger characters.

Step 2: Background

Next, add a solid color adjustment layer to set the background for our design. You can choose any color you like, but for this tutorial, we'll stick with a neutral beige (#F5F5DC).

Using the Brush Tool, paint over the area where you want to add the lower part of the text. Make sure to set the Hardness slider to 0% for a smooth transition.

Step 10: Adjusting Gradient

Hover your cursor over the text without closing the Layer Style dialog box and then click and drag to move the gradient. This will help us achieve a more natural-looking effect with our gradient overlay.
